SOCIAL AND DANCE IN AID OF RED CROSS SOCIETY There was a large attendance in the local hall recently, the - occasion being a social and dance organised -by the women's committee of the local branch of the National Party. The proceeds were in aid of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, which will benefit by a considerable amount from the effort. Music for dancing was supplied by Mr W. Crowe’s orchestra, Mr J. Staiger playing the extras. Novelty dances were won by Miss Betty Vercoe, and Mr N. Mario, and Miss Joan Luxton and Mr D. Luxtfln. Competitions were won by Mr R. Pekin and Mr E. Parker. Items were contributed during the evening by the following:—Mrs W. Burch, and Mrs H. 0. Cooper, songs; the Sullivan sisters, tap dancing; Mr L Rosenfeldt, songs. Mr A. H. Holland was master of ceremonies. A card tournament was arranged for non-dancers, the winners being Mrs R. Malcolm and Mr A. J. Graham. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs C. Waddell, Waihou, and Mr D. Craig. Mr R. Walker was in charge of the card tournament. Following the supper interval Mr A. J. Luxton introduced Mr W. S. Goosman, M.P., and Mr J. M. Allen, M.P. They were accompanied by Mrs Goosman and Mrs Allen. Speeches by Members Mr Allen spoke briefly on world conditions, and stressed the necessity for farmers to produce as much as possible. Mr Goosman congratulated the organisers on the success of the function, and endorsed Mr Allen’s remarks. Mr Luxton thanked the artists who had so willingly given their services. CARDS AND DANCINQ Another successful function was held under the auspices of the Hall Committee recently, the occasion being a vice versa dance. There was a large attendance, including many visitors from the surrounding districts. Music was provided by Mrs W. Glover, Messrs 11. Holland, W. Gibbons, and F. Coulter, extras being played by Mr J. Staiger. A novelty dance was won by Miss M. Wensley and partner. The winners of the impersonation contest were Mrs P. Andermatt and Mr J. Johnston. Mr A H. Holland was master of ceremonies. The successful players in the five hundred card tournament held in conjunction with tfie dance were Mrs L. Miles (Waihou), and Mr S. Craig. Mr A. J. Graham was in charge of the card room.
