GERMANS IN COURT
CHARQEB OF DESERTION GLEN AFTON EMPLOYEES (Ur TeHripn —Press Auocl.tloo) AUCKLAND, Tuesday Rudolph Schmuesser, aged 18, appeared on remand In the Police Court charged with deserting from the German ship Dortmund. He had been working In a mine at Glen Alton and was arrested when he registered In Auckland as an alien. Yesterday another German, Paul Breur, a seaman, aged 19, was arrested on a similar charge. He had been working at Glen Afton. They appeared together today on the desertion charge, and also the further charge of landing in New Zealand without permits. Schmuesser said he had consulted a solicitor and asked for a remand until counsel was available. The magistrate, Mr F. H. Levien, said that nothing had yet been decided concerning Germans residing in New Zealand. The police suggested a remand until Tuesday. In granting the remand the magistrate said there would be no further remands. Each was liable to 12 months' imprisonment on one of the charges.
