EXQUISITE HANDIWORK
SUCCESSFUL PRE-VIEW MRS F. A. POWELL'S STUDIO I The exhibition of crafts work at present being held by Mrs Florence A. Powell and her students at the studio, Wesley Chambers, presents a picture of a world far removed lrom mundane affairs and imprisons in lour walls a veritable riot of colour and artistic effort. The display is further enhanced by its clever arrangement, much time and thought having been given to t.hc creation of such a harmonious effect. The exhibition was officially opened by Mr J. Trcloar, president of the Waikato Society of Arts, at a private view last night, when there was an exceptionally large attendance. Importance of a Hobby In his address Mr Trcloar spoke very warmly of the work studios such as Mrs Powell’s were doing in fostering an appreciation of beauty in the community and in furnishing a means of expression for many people. lie remarked on the inherent love of hobbies found in British people, and expressed the opinion that in the difficult days to come, hobbies would be a source of great consolation to many, not as a means of escape from duties, but as a means to prepare to face them. lie concluded by congratulating Mrs Powell on the varied and wonderfully attractive work displayed. Master Austin Wright, on behalf of the students, made a presentation to Mrs Powell in appreciation of her willing assistance at all times, and little Heather Webb, the youngest pupil, presented her with a lovely bouquet of flowers, Mrs Powell briefly returning thanks. The guests then found much to interest them in the various types of handicraft and later supper was served. The exhibition is open until next. Friday. Mrs Powell received the guests wearing a charming frock of black chiffon velvet. She was assisted by Miss I. Wordsworth, who wore a black crepe mignon gown and Miss 1. Vercoe in a black taffeta frock and a floral lame coatee Some of the Guests Among those present were:— Mesdames J. Treloar, A. Burgoyne, F. Young, Alec McGlennan (Matangi), W.
