Hamilton Playbox and Red Cross At a meeting of the committee of the Hamilton Playbox last night it was decided to stage "The Late Christopher Bean" next month on behalf of the funds of the Red Cross. Celebrations Postponed The Otamatea ‘County Centennial committee has decided to postpone till after the war all the memorial celebrations so far scheduled. Funds exceeding £2OOO are to be deposited in the Savings Bank in the names of the trustees. Hobson Anniversary Sunday was the 97th anniversary of the death of Captain William Hobson R.X., the first Governor of New Zealand. Yesterday a large gathering ot school children and the public made the annual pilgrimage to his grave in the Symonds Street cemetery, Auckland. This was the Jsth time the ceremony has been observed. Champion Band Withdraws The St. Kilda Municipal Band, Dunedin, the champion quickstep band of New Zealand, has decided that in view of the outbreak of war it will not take part in the New Zealand brass band championship, to be held in Wellington next February. The band has attended the championships for 19 years in succession. Centennial Celebrations "1 think public opinion now is that the Centennial should be knocked on the head,’’ said Mr R. G. Young at the meeting of the Waikato County Council, today, when the county was asked by the Department of Internal AfTairs to nominate members for a Centennial committee for arranging celebrations in the district. It was decided that in view of the changed conditions the appointment of a committee would not be welcome. Kaiapoi Woollen Company The Kaiapoi Woollen Manufacturing Company, Limited, shows an increase in the net profit of £926 to £13,569. The balancing total is £38,700 lower at £588,213. Reserves comprise general reserve, £3000; accident insurance, £8907; employees’ welfare, £3000; marine insurance, £2354; pensions fund, £10,000; income tax, £lO,000; bad and doubtful debts, £2OOO. Increases of £653 and £439 are shown in the accident and marine insurance reserves respectively. Train Crew and Burning Bhed A shed on the property of Mr W. 11. Rudkin, close to the railway line near Stratford, was destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. The fire was observed by the crew of a train, who, fearing that the flames would spread to the residence, stopped the engine and sounded the whistle. This not proving effective, they went to the house and aroused the sleeping inmates, whom they assisted in prevent- ! ing the flames spreading to the house. Toothless and Carless Mr 11. S. S. Kyle, M.P. for Riccarton, is "doing his bit" towards conserving the country’s petrol supplies. (On Saturday afternoon he arrived at the Spreydon School, where he opened a new dental clinic, on horseback. During the ceremony the chairman of Die school committee, Mr L. Ditfort, sard that lie was speaking at a disadvantage, but it would show the need of a dental clinic. He was without bis dentures. Mr Kyle followed this up by apologising for appearing in riding breeches. He was without petrol. Petrol Tax Objection At its last meeting, the Waikato Council Council decided to object to the Government on the increase of 4d a gallon in the petrol tax. At the meeting to-day communications were received from the Hon. W. E. Parry, for the Minister of Finance, and from the Hon. W. Lee Martin, stating that the council’s objections would be borne in mind. Mr J. M. Allen, M.P. for Ha-uraki, has promised to give the council full support to its objections, noting that the added burden to the council would be £SOO a year. Water For Dairy When the plant at the Taupiri factory of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited was recently altered to electrically driven, the company decided to instal new pumps to secure a water supply from the Waikato River. Plans for the work were approved by the Waikato County Council to-day. It is proposed to instal two electrically driven pumps, one for regular use and one as a stand-by. Each will have a pumping capacity of Production and 40-Hour Week The Ashburton Hospital Board has decided to request the Government that in view of the war legislation in regard to the 40-hour week be relaxed in keeping with the Government’s request that production should be increased. The chairman, Mr W. G. Gallagher, in moving the resolution, said he could not see how the Government’s call for more production could be met if it continued to ask one section of the community to work 40 hours a week and other sections to work 60 or 70. In building operations the Government was giving men large periods of overtime and the country was paying out enormous sums in overtime money. Polish Photographic Exhibition On July 26 some optimistic artists in Poland posted numbers of communications to all parts of the world. The ones addressed to Christchurch arrived last week—entry forms for photographers wishing to send work to the eleventh international salon of the Polish Photographic Society to open in Warsaw on October 15. The salon would celebrate the centennial of photography in Poland. One of the regulations given in English states: •’The Polish Photographic Society will bring her utmost care in handling of pictures without assuming whatever responsibility for damages which may arise during the transport or exhibition of same.” Spend this summer in the comfort of sports apparel.
