SIR PHILIP SASSOON DISTINGUISHED CAREER CLOSES (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, June 3 The death has occurred of Sir Philip Sassoon, formerly Under-Secretary for Air. Sir Philip Sassoon, politician, airman and art-lover, was horn in December, 1888. On his father's death Sir Philip was elected to succeed him as Conserva-
five M.P. for Ilythe, Kent, where he had an estate. During the war he was secretary to Field-Marshal Earl Haig. For his services lie was mentioned in despatches three times and received the G.M.G. On the formation of the Baldwin Cabinet in November, 1924, Sir Philip was appointed Under-Secretary for Air. In 1928 he carried out a flight of 17,000 miles to inspect the 25 Royal Air Force stations in Egypt, the Sudan, Irak and India. Sir Philip became a squadronleader in the Auxiliary Air Force in 1929. When Mr Chamberlain became Prime Minister in May, 1937, he made Sir Philip First Commissioner of Works.
