Farewell to “Hollywood Hotel” Two performances—afternoon and evening—of the ‘'Hollywood Hotel” revue were given in Hamilton on Saturday, the Theatre Royal being crowded. The company will open a season in Auckland this afternoon. Prime Minister’s New Home The Prime Minister, the Right Hon. M J. Savage, expects to take up residence in his new home at Harbour View. Northland, Wellington, about the middle of next week. Some of his effects have already been transferred there. More Australian Workers A party of 38 Australian workers who arrived at Auckland by the Awatea from Sydney yesterday included nine under contract to the Government for employment In the liutt railway workshops. The remainder, 28 men and a woman, came to the Domiuion independently in search of work. Rlmutaka Tunnel Project A Press Association message from Wellington states that the Rimutaka Hill survey in connection with the railway tunnel project, on which 10 men have been engaged for some months, has now ceased, as it has been found unprofitable to do survey work ou high country in wet winter conditions. Missing Recruits Report Some young men who enlisted in the territorials in Auckland as a result of the campaign by the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, and who did not answer official communications to attend for medical examination, have reported at post offices- Some stated they had not received the notices informing them of Lhe time of examination. Social Security Payments Some employers, especially of domestics, are reported to be paying the Social Security contribution lor their employees, and not deducting the amounts from the wages, it is pointed out that this is illegal, and Dial when they pay a contribution witiiout deduction, they automatically increase the amount of wages or Lhe equivalent, which is also subject to tax. Family Sleep In Car After a month of fruitless househunting a family at GreymOuth were compelled this week to sleep for three nights in their motor-car. They were unable even to obtain temporary accommodation at a hotel or boardinghouse. One hotel proprietor offered to board the family for a week for 14gns., ou the understanding that they would vacate their rooms at the week-end. The family finally obtained three rooms in a private house, for which they are paying 32s 6d a week. Auckland-Kawhia Service An application from Western Highway Motors for permission to operate a weekly passenger and parcel service between Auckland and Kawhia, heard in Hamilton last month has been granted by the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority, Mr E. J. Phelan. The service will be run three times each way during the week, from Kawhia and Auckland alternately. The first trip will be made on Monday, June 12, starting from Kawhia, aud following the west coast route. Malicious False Alarm A call maliciously given was received by the Hamilton Fire Brigade at eight o’clock on Saturday night to the corner of Grey and Albert Streets, Hamilton East. Two engines with 18 men responded to the call. It was pointed out by the superintendent of the brigade this morning that the penalty attached to the giving of a malicious false alarms is a fine not exceeding £SO, or three months’ imprisonment. Amateur Blondln A performance reminiscent of the I acts of the famous Blondin, but for an j amateur somewhat foolhardy, horrified • pedestrians on the Hamilton railway (bridge at about 5 p.m. on Saturday. A I young man climbed over the hand;rail and proceeded to make his way, somewhat precariously, along the ■outer edge of the railway track. A liaise step would have precipitated him | into the Waikato River, but after safely negotiating a considerable dis- | tance of the bridge he was persuaded Iby friends to give up his dangerous performance. Old Landmark Disappears The pagoda on the Victoria Street lrontage of Garden Place Ilall, which was one of the best known landmarks of the town, was pulled down this morning, and a much better idea of the tremendous amount of spoil already shifted can now be gained from Victoria Street. Shortly before 10 o'clock one of the big bulldozers was brought up to the main street frontage, and within half-an-hour one of the links with early Hamilton was gone. A huge crowd gathered on the I footpath to watch the passing of what was for years a haven of refuge for tired shoppers.
