FIRE IN HALL

/’INEMA SCREENING LITTLE PANIC AMONG AUDIENCE (Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Monday A fire occurred in the office of the Avondale Town Hall on Saturday nightwhile a cinema programme was being screened in the hall. There was little panic amongst the audience, which numbered about 300, and little structural damage of the building resulted. A portion (about £18). of the day’s receipts was destroyed. The flames temporarily barred the normal exit for persons sitting upstairs! Seizing a strip of runner carpet firemen threw one end up to others on the balcony. Holding the carpet at each end, the firemen told the people to make use of it to slide to safety, and the only casualties were four persons burned on hands or face, Mr Rudall Hayward, the manager, being the worst sufferer.
