ROTOWARO WIN

ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL WANDERERS' SECOND DEFEAT SOUTH AUCKLAND COMPETITIONS Hamilton Wanderers suffered their second successive defeat of the season at Seddon Park on Saturday when they went down to Rotowaro by two goals to one, when the South Auckland Football Association's senior competition was continued. Even and exciting play was the order throughout and there was little between the teams. At half-time the score was I—o1 —0 In favour of the visitors. The teams lined out as follows: Rotowaro.—A. Kidd, A. Tait, J. Gill, B. Beaumont, J. Robson, C. Stevens, E. Taylor, R. Taylor, H. Gill, E. Berry, H. Crooks. Hamilton Wanderers. —Webster, Gardiner, McLean, G. Crahb, Dave Ciabb, McCall, Bullock, A. Crabb, Stewart, Caldwell, J. Fisher. The first few minutes were not productive of any particularly bright play and neither team held the territorial advantage for any length of time. Things livened up considerably when Crooks and Berry made a bold hid witli a pretty session of passing, but C. Crabb spoilt matters and carried the play into foreign territory. Beaumont was responsible for some strong defence, but Stewart went close when he took the ball right up to Kidd's goal. The ’keeper was sound, however, and cleared smartly, Dave Crabb’s Defence A couple of corner kicks were of no avail to tiie home team, but they took the play back into the visitors’ territory time and again. An infringement enabled Stevens to send his team within striking distance, but they could not maintain the pressure and were soon on the defensive again. J. Gill sent the forward line away shortly after, but Dave Crai>b was strong on defence and his accurate kicking turned the tide once more. The home team carried on hut Caldwell spoilt a good scoring chance when he sent the ball over the bar. Once again the visitors asserted themselves and set up a determined attack in front of Webster’s goal. All efforts to drive them off were to no effect, and R. Taylor decided matters when he drove the ball into the bark ol' the net. Rotowaro 1, Wanderers 0.

Determined efforts to avenge this setback were made by Wanderers, but the opposing defence was sound and gave tiie attackers no latitude. Kidd showed a safe pair of hands and saved nicely when Dave Crabb sent in a smart shot from w'ell out. B. Gill went within striking distance when he took the ball away in a solo run, but support was lacking and the defence was too strong for him. , Exciting Play

Another siege in front of Webster’s goal produced a period of exciting play in which a score seemed likely at any moment. Several times the attackers rushed the goal, but the defence heid good and eventually sent the playout of danger. The fast pace was maintained, but although Rotowaro had several shots at goal the half-time whistle came without alteration to the score.

Caldwell sent Bullock away at the start of the second half, hut Stewart was too eager and skied the ball high over the bar. However, Wanderers kept up the pressure and gave the visiting defence no rest. After a short session in front of Webster's goal Bullock went away again, and he centred well to C. Crabb. Stewart failed to take the pass, however, and the play went out of danger. Before long Bullock and Caldwell were hack again, but the defence was giving few

chances and kept the goaJ Intact. McLean and Gardiner gave a good account of themselves when the play sw-ung to their end and afforded a good shield for the ’keeper. Several times they held up likely movements and McLean's 6trong kicking was a great factor Jn turning defence Into attack. Webster had a series of close calls when the Rotowaro forwards harried hig goal, and on a couple of occasions he was lucky to clear. Wanderers’ Desperate Effort Again the excitement rose when Wanderers rushed down to Rotow&ro's goal in a desperate effort to equalise, but Kidd was safe and gave no chances away Taking a past from Bullock. McCall had a kick at goal, but his shot went astray and, from the ensuing play, Webster was given another •busy few minutes. Once again the home team went aw-ay in a fast run, but Kidd saved smartly and relieved the position. The relief wag short-lived, however, for C. Crabb and Caldwell came back again. Tait and J. Gill worked well together and, with Beaumont in support, they broke down •everal likely forays. The equalising goal came shortly after when, taking the ball from Caldwell, Fisher gained a good deal of ground down the line before be centred for Bullock to snap a smart shot into the corner of the net.* Kidd made a splendid effort to savfc, but the shot gave him no chance. JWandererg 1, Rotowaro 1. This state of affairs was not to last for long, however, for Rotowaro took the play away in determined manner. Following a melee in front of Webster's goal, R. Taylor took up a rebound and made no mistake with a quick sliot. Rotowaro 2. Wanderer* 1.
