MORRINSVILLE SUB=UNION
EVEN SENIOR GAMES OLD BOYS WIN BY POTTED GOAL (Special to Times) MORRINSVILLE, Sunday A field goal by A. J. Aitken, the Waikato representative, gave uld Boys a win over United by 9 —o -yesterday in one of Die keenest senior championship games seen at Morrinsville for years. uld Boys had defeated Kereone, last year’s champions, oil the previous Saturday, and its supporters expected it easily to defeat Hie United team, which has not yet won a match.in a game of surprises United took the lead with a try by Morris, the United captain, a few minutes alter the start. Morris followed up to beat the Uld Boys backs for the bull following a good United forward rush. A few minutes later -Vlenzies scored for United from a line-out. The teams changed over with United leading by o — o. Old Boys made good use of the sun behind it in the second half, and was on attack for almost the whole 40 minutes, but could cross United's line only once. K. Shirley, Old Boys’ promoted junior half, gave his backs plenty of the ball, but the United tackling was generally sound. Early in the second half the United backs were too intent on marking Aitken, at centre three-quarter, and L. Muir, the second five-eighth dummied his way thronugh to score near the United posts, Aitken converted.—Old Boys 5, United 6. With only a point separating the scores, play was fast and exciting, with Old Boys’ backs trying every move to get another try. Twice Aitken had chances to score from free kicks, but the hall curled just outside the posts. With time nearly up Aitken attempted a field goal from well outside the twenty-five, and in the failing light there was a division of opinion as to whether the ball went ever the bar as it fell. The referee signalled a goal, making the scores— Old Boys 9, United 6. United made great efforts to retrieve the position, but could not add to its score. Mr Ferguson, of Matamata, was referee. KEREONE BEAT TERRIERS Equal interest was taken in the match between Kereone, led by J. 'Leeson, former Waikato and New Zealand representative, and Terriers, for whom T. Heeps, the former Hamilton representative, is playing this year. At half-time the score was 5-all, hut Kereone got the deciding try in the second half to win by B—s. Good back play by Terriers was a feature of the first half, and from one good passing rush Ileeps made an opening from which R. Davidson raced round behind the posts to score. G. VYetere converted. A few minutes later Kereone equalised, when Howie cut througli and sent the ball to Watts, who scored. W. Cameron converted. An even second half followed. From a scrum near Terriers’ line W. Cameron ran througli on the blind side and T. Clurkin scored. —Kereone 8, Terriers 5.
