GERMANS HOAXED
‘STRAIGHT FROM GOERING’ RUSE OF A DUTCHMAN SPOILS FROM CZECHOSLOVAKIA (Times Air Mail Service) LONDON, May 5. By claiming that he came ‘‘straight from Goering,” a Dutchman to-day crossed the German frontier into Holland with £IOO,OOO in banknotes, silver and valuables from the former Czechoslovakia, reports the Amsterdam correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. Driving a German car. he received the greatest deference from soldiers and officials in the Reich. Everywhere, he said, they jumped to attention when he waxed his valueless papers and shouted: “Straight from Goering.” At the Dutch frontier the German guards hastened to open the barriers to let the car pass. All the people of Holland are laughing to-night. The hoax reminds them of the famous cobbler of Koeipenick, near Berlin. Before the Great War he masqueraded as a high military personage. The Dutch driver was arrested in Holland and police seized his silver, the import of large quantities of which is prohibited. Later, however, he was released and allowed to keep the rest of the money and the valuables.
