HIRING OF BUSES

ACTION AGAINST CORPORATION ALLEGED BREACH OF ACT (By Telegraph—Tress Association) PUXEDIN. Thursday The City Coi 4 .a! un was proceeded against in the Police Court by the Transport Department, on an information alleging that it carried on a paseenger service otherwise than pursuant to authority. The case, stated counsel for the department, rested upon the interpretation of the words “special occasion” in the Act. It was contended that the hiring of buses for a school picnic at Whare Flat and by members of Oddfellowers lodges to Kaitangata. ■which were two of eight alleged offences, were not “special occasions.” The manager of the tramways department gave evidence that the corporation refused applications for buses where they were not for a private party or a special occasion. Counsel for the defence stated that no means of regular transport were available at the times required. All the cases were for private parties. The magistrate reserved his decision.
