Parry, stated that ■with the introduction in April of the Social Security Act the Dominion** Pension Bill Act was automatically increased by £1,608,000. The aggregate figures do not cover new applications, hut represent the increased annual cost of the change-over from pensions and allowances in force at March 31 to benefits as from April 1. The classes of pensioners which benefited and the amount of increase in each rase were:—Maori War. £500; miners. £0500; widows. £70,000; family allowances, £87.000; invalidity, £41.000; and age, £1,400.000. Since the Social Security Act had become operative, 29,453 new applications had been received for benefits in the various classes, apart from those received for unemployment and sickness benefits.
