SEQUEL TO JOY RIDE

INTOXICATED MOTORIST COMPANION TO FACE CHARGES (By Telegraph.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. Allegations that two young men, one of whom was intoxicated, hired a motor car in the city on the evening of May 25 by means of a forgery, were made by Sub-Inspector W. E. Packer in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. The sub-inspector said that the men had picked up two women, fgid had later gone joy-riding in the country, where an alleged assault took place. When they returned to Christchurch they made a determined effort to escape when a constable gave chase. Patrick McQuillan, aged 23, butcher, was charged with being intoxicated in charge of a motor car in Manchester Street. He pleaded guilty, and was convicted and sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labour. His license was cancelled, and he was declared unfit to hold another license for 18 months. McQuiJian’s case was heard first. His companion on the evening the offence took place, Percy Iloyce Hewlett, labourer, of Rutherham Street, will appear on five charges later. One of Worst Cases “This is one of the worst cases of intoxication that has ever been before the court," said the sub-inspec-tor in outlining the case against McQuillan. "From 8 p.m. to 2.20 a.m. next morning he was in charge of the car, and there is nothing at all to be said in his favour." Between 5 and 6 p.m. on May 25, said Sub-Inspector Packer, the two men had been drinking in the Lower Riccarton Hotel. They decided to go for a joy-ride, and bought two “square riggers" and two bottles of beer. McQuillan had the only license, so they went to a rental firm and Howlett hired a car, handing it over in the street to his friend, who was not in a ■fit state to drive. In Victoria Street the men picked up two women, who agreed to go to Templeton. There was no dance there, and they went on to West Melton- Here, at a lonely point of the road, McQuillan, who was driving, pulled up. Something happened and the women jumped out of the car, and from then on Howlett Look charge of the vehicle.
