DELUGE ON PITCAIRN
EXTENSIVE DAMAGE NUMEROUS LANDSLIDES (Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Friday Advice received from Pitcairn Island under date May 15, reports that 12 inches of rain fell in four hours doing damage that will take years to repair. Numerous landslides carried thousands of trees dowm the hillsides into the harbour, filling the basin with many feet of mud, the sea for miles being discoloured and covered with floating debris. Twn men narrowly escaped being overwhelmed by an avalanche of mud while endeavouring to haul a long boat to safety. Some of the canoes w T ere saved, but the boathouses were smashed to splinters. The contour of the western part of the island and the emergency harbour is completely changed, and many of the old landmarks have disappeared. If further rain falls it is feared that much more damage will result, as a number of Incipient land slides have been observed in the hills.
