ANOTHER CHANCE
FARM HAND CONVICTED THEFT FROM EMPLOYER “The Rev. Father places more trust in you than 1 do,” said Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, •Hamilton, to-day. when extending a last chance to Mervyn James Roland Vallillev (20) a farm hand (Mr H. J. McMullin), who was charged with the theft of 20s 4d, by placing him on probation for a period of two years. “You understand, Vallillev,” said Mr Paterson, “that this is your last chance and that is being given to you only because the Rev. Father O’Connor has taken an interest in you. Do not let me down or else I may never give a chance to some other unfortunate person who comes before me.” Stating that Vallillev was already on probation, Detective A. J. White, who prosecuted, said the accused's conduct had not been altogether satisfactory and apparently he could not be trusted. Working at Horotiu Vallilley committed the offence when working at Horotiu as a farm hand. His employer, Mrs Kathleen Duxfleld, gave him a letter with £1 enclosed to post, asking him to register the letter in the post. Vallilley kept the letter and the money and lel't his work on the farm. He was later arrested in Hamilton by Detective J. Hayes. in 1936 and 1937 Vallilley was convicted for theft. Mr McMullin said the case was one of youthful foolishness. The youth had very little opportunities, however, as his mother died when lie was young while his father was away from him. Mr .McMullin said the Rev. Father U’Connor, of Frankton, would watch Vallilley if lie were placed on probation.
