WORK RESUMED
FREEZING WORKS DISPUTE STOPPAGE ON TUESDAY AUCKLAND, Thursday The employees at the Westfield Freezing Works resumed work yesterday, following upon a stoppage of slaughtering and allied operations involving between 800 and 900 workers. A mass meeting decided to refer the issues in dispute to a dispute committee. No beef slaughtering was carried out on Tuesday morning and in the afternoon the entire works were idle. The stoppage developed from the inability of the slaughtermen and the management to reach agreement on the conditions and wages payable to two men employed as shacklers. A request Tor an increase in the hourly wage of 2s 7d was not met by the management, and on Tuesday morning the slaughtermen did not commence work.
It was stated that in consequence of the installation of additional plant it was found necessary to employ two men in the shackling pit to cope with the increased output of beef carcases. The view was taken by the workers tliat the arduous and hazardous nature of the work merited a higher rate of payment.
