NO ASSISTANCE TO JAPAN
APPEAL TO NEW ZEALAND LETTER FROM MADAME CHIANG* "Our people are more determined than ever to carry on, while our soldiers at the front are meeting the superior armament of the Japanese with heroism unequalled in the history of wars,” writes Madame Chiang Kaishek, wife of the Chinese Generalissimo, in a letter to Mr Barnard. M.P., Speaker of the House of Representatives, expressing thanks to the people of New Zealand for their assistance in connection with the adoption of Chinese refugee children.
"it is deplorable that the democracies, who did not realise what the occupation of Manchuria would lead to, have assisted Japan to fasten her hold upon China by supplying her with materials of war," she continued. "However, they are now awakening, late, it Is true, hut, we hope, ready to show they intend to uphold justice and the sanctity of treaties. Any hesitation to place an embargo on Japan will encourage that country to continue with the desolation of China and will reduce the interests of the British Empire in Asia to nil."
