WOMEN IN CONFERENCE
EMPIRE FARMERS’ WIVES A TOUCH OF PAGEANTRY NEW ZEALAND DELEGATES (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, May 30 Farmers’ wives from many countries, distinctively clad, were eclipsed by a sole touch of English pageantry marking the opening - of the conference of the World's Associated Countrywomen at Central Hall, Westminster, representing 4,000,000 of their sex, including Australian and New Zealand delegates. The English touch was supplied by the only man present—namely, an official herald, arrayed in emblazoned tabard and mediaeval small-clothes, who announced each speaker with a trumpet. England otherwise was drably represented in comparison with the striking peasant costumes of the more imaginative countries. The New Zealand actress, Miss Marie Ney, spoke the. prologue, and Lady Denman welcomed the delegates. The Italians and -Germans gave the Fascist and Nazi salutes. The Germans are hostesses of the New Zealanders.
