SETTLEMENT ISOLATED
WAIROA RIVER FLOODED The Maori settlement at Kihitu, East Coast, was isolated as the outcome of exceptionally heavy rain which flooded the Wairoa River. The marooned residents were rescued in boats. Many boats in the river, including a large launch, were torn from their moorings and swept away by the flood. The southern approach to a bridge at the foot of the bluff was a raging torrent, and the roadway was scoured out for several chains. The bridge is in a precarious condition.
