DISPUTES CONSIDERED
I CONCILIATION COURT | ! * I “CLAIMS STILL UNSETTLED” | . I REMARK? BY JUDGE ' (By TflJearaph. —Press Association) WELLINGTON*. Wednesday • In the Conciliation Council, Wellingi ton, the industrial district tobaccon- ' isls and hairdressers’ dispute met today. The chief matter discussed was whether saloons should close on the . statutory half-holiday, and it was an- : nounced that since the previous meetj ing a ballot was taken showing 146 : in favour and 4 0 against so doing. The district extends from Wellington to j Wairoa on the East Coast, and Patea I on the West Coast. Certain hairdressers claimed that they would lose custom if forced to close on Saturday afternoons and it ■would be tantamount to making them observe two half-holiday# in a week. The Commissioner assured the objectors that if a complete agreement was arrived at in Conciliation Council the objectors to closing on the statutory half-holiday would have the opportunity of presenting their objection to the Court when it was asked to convert it into an award. Picture Projectionists’ Case The motion picture projectors’ dispute also came before the Arbitration Court to-day. The judge remarked that it was discouraging to find such a large proportion of claims still unsettled despite the passing of the year and a full ploughing of the ground. Mr Mountjoy said the employers viewed the present award with disfavour and dissatisfaction. Its application to small country theatres meant that the employers were called upon for 5s an hour for men earning a living in another industry, whereas the men getting a living from it received only 2s 9d per hour. Mr R. J. Reardon, for the union, said that for 23 years the employers had been content to pay on a weekly basis and now it proposed to reduce the weekly wage-earners to an hourly basis. Mr Mountjoy was granted an adjournment until to-morrow
