GOODS SERVICES

GRANTING OF LICENSES AREAS TO BE RESTRICTED DECISION OF THE AUTHORITY “I am not going to grant a general goods license to be hawked all over the No. 1 Licensing District,” said Mr E. J. Phelan, the No. 1 Authority, in Hamilton to-day, when several applications came before him for licenses to operate over the whole territory to cart for the Public Works Department and to carry general goods in addition. “The time lias arrived when we will have to separate general goods licenses and authorities to cart for the Public Works Department.” The authority reiterated a previous warning that operators carting for the Public Works Department could not expect to be granted general goods licenses when the works on which they were engaged were completed. Public Works have been going on rapidly for the past few years, let us hope they will continue for at least another 12 months,” he said in renewing several licenses for the work for a period of one year. “We have received complaints.” added the authority, “that people cannot obtain trucks to carry general goods lor them and wo have found 1 th'Tt many operators holding licenses for general goods and Public Works jebs. are. using their trucks on the department’s business and neglecting the public. It is too dangerous to grant licenses of that nature in future.” Carrying of Stock Complaints had been expressed by the Railways Department that operators with extended live-stock licenses which allowed them to carry stock to Westfield were going further afield and often neglecting their own districts with the result that manure consigned to railway stations was often held up at the station with inconvenience to both the railway department and the farmers. The carriers associations had discussed the matter at a conference in Wellington yesterday, however, when it was agreed to endeavour to co-ord-inate the activities of operators between the railway and the public. Mr Phelan expressed the hope that some arrangement would be made for he had found that the fault did not often lie with the railways. Mr Phelan remarged on several occasions while considering applications to-day the desirability of operators becoming members of some carriers’ association. It was very desirable that a check could be kept on their operations.
