PRESIDENT RESIGNS

Copyright) (Received March 1, 3.15 p.m.) PARIS, Feb. 28 The President, Don Azana, has sent a letter explaining his resignation. He said that he deisred peace and • considered that defeat was inevitable, in which the majority of the Spanish people and the Republican General Staff concurred. He added that he had not resigned prior to this, because he believed it still possible to negotiate, but the English and French recognition of General Franco rendered negotiations impossible and made bis continuance as President useless. Appointment of Suocessor Don Azana asked Senor Barrio to And a necessary successor as President. Dr JVegrin summoned a meeting of the Cabinet, but did not disclose the locale.
