DROP FOR BEEF
DECLINE AT FRANKTON SHEEP RATES REPEATED BETTER INQUIRY FOR PIGS Although better quality cattle were forward, there was no Improvement in the demand for fat cattle at the Frankton sale yesterday and values again dropped. Fat sheep were again traded quietly, but late quotations were generally repeated. Competition appeared a little sharper in the fat pig section, but values were generally the same as last week. Only a small entry of bullocks was available, hut quality was more attractive, several pens of handv-weight sorts being included. Competition was very restrained and the auctioneers had no easy task in drawing bids. Prices were at least 10s per head down,. while the price per 1001 b. was back in most cases by approximately is. Yesterday’s top bid was £l2 15s against £l2 4s. hut yesterday’s cattle were better quality sorts. Other good medium-weight cattle realised from £ll 2s 6d to £l2, with light sorts changing- hands from £8 t-o £lO 2s 6d. The sale was the poorest since the spring rise despite the fact that the supply was limited. Cows and heifers were also cheaper, but not so noticeably as bullocks, good heifers occasionally selling at late rates. Best sorts were traded from £6 10s to £8 10s, but the bulk of the entry sold below £5. The market for boner cattle and potter bulls was not as strong as last week. In the calf market the top price was £8 12s 6d in comparison with £8 11s last week, values for a smaller entry being much the same. Little Change For Sheep There was little change for fat sheep, which were forward in lighter numbers. Top price for wethers was 20s 6d against 20s 3d last week, the range of values for top lines generally being from 17s 6d to 19s 9d. Extra prime ewes made from 8s 6d to 10s 9d, which was practically the same as last week, with a few pens of njaiden ewes realising up to 15s. The yarding was probably the smallest for some months, but as with last week lirriHed supplies failejd to stimulate competition. Lambs were not up to the quality of those last week, but several good lines were available and values were practically the same. One line of 210, which included a number of good sheep, was knocked down at 16s 6d. Light-weight pigs and butter-milk pigs were slightly brighter of sale and occasionally prices for these seemed a little better. Baconers were again quoted from 60s to 725, but porkers made from 30s to 58s, with a top bid of 60s, against 30s to 725. A lull sale was experienced for store pigs and ail classes cheaper.
