IRRIGATION SCHEME
TO COST £1,000,000 DAMMING TAIERI RIVER (Special to Times) DUNEDIN, Monday The damming- of the Taieri River near its source to create a 20 to 30 square mile lake with sufficient water storage to irrigate 100,000 acres of the Maniototo Plains at a cost of £1,000,000 or more, is a project which settlers in this wide regitn are hopeful will shortly be put in hand by the Government. The scheme is a huge one, but official interest in the proposal has already extended to substantial expenditure on surveys and estimates, and landholders are hopeful that if the possibilities are kept steadily before the Government, the largest and most extensive irrigation scheme in Central Otago will in time be in operation. Notwithstanding that farming in the Maniototo district has been carried on for many years without the aid of irrigation on any substantial scale, there can be no question of the need for more water on the Plains. The average annual rainfall in the district is 16.87in., which is considerably below what is regarded as sufficient for growth.
