FITNESS WEEK DISPLAY OPEN-AIR NIGHT CARNIVAL f Special to Times) MORRINSVILLE, Monday The celebration in Morrinsville of Fitness Week concluded on Saturday evening- with a procession through the town of the j Municipal Band. Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, . Territorials and a Maori party. The procession ended at the Children’s Playground, where a stadium had been arranged for exhibitions of boxing and wrestling. Temporary seating accommodation was provided. The programme •>: fencing, boxing and wrestling was continued Tor about three hours, and hakas and poi dances were given by the Kiwitahi Maoris. Various forms of fencing were demonstrated by members of the Morrinsville Foil and Sabre Club. Fill fighting was shown by Misses N. and E. Arndt, Miss Nlcholls and Mr W. Hawkings; epee fight - I ing by the Rev. G. A. Naylor and Mr 1.. W. j Osborne; and sabre fighting by Mr Naylor j and Mr L. R. Harris. i The boxing and wrestling exhibitions were staged with the assistance or the Morrinsville Physical Culture Club. Visiting boxers and wrestlers included Hamilton boxers under the direction of Mr H. Bennett, and Waihi boxers and wrestlers under Mr H. Cowan, also boxers from T&umarunui. The Girl Guides gave rolk dances on the lawn. BOROUGH RATES A RECORD COLLECTION A record percentage of 76.05 or current rates collected is reported by the town rlerk or Morrinsville. Mr A. G. Strahan. The 10 per cent penalty on unpaid rates was imposed last week and only 18 ratepayers then had rates outstanding. In 1038 the Morrinsville Borough Council collected 96.71 per cent of current rates, and in 10 37 it collected 95.5 per cent. Rates collectable for the current year totalled £B2 48. or which £7 580 has been collected, and £33-2 given by way of rebate on rates paid within one month of demand, or the total or £326 outstanding £122 is owing by the State Advances Department and the State Housing Department. HORTICULTURAL BHOW The Allen Cup for most points at the Morrinsville Horticultural Show on Friday was gained by Mr A. O. Vowles. with a total of 114 points. Mr Vowles also secured the vegetables points prize with a total or 97 points in that section. He was also an exhibitor of cut flowers and fruit. The decorative section points prize was won by Mrs W. Smith, or Hamilton Road, who wins the trophy donated by the Globe Furnishing and Auctioneering Company. , Miss H. V. Clifford won the arts and crarts section points • prize. Mrs A. Drummond, of Gordonton, won the Philpott Cup outright ror the best decorated table, colour scheme, having won the trophy twice previously. Mrs Drummond has given it back to the society Tor further competition. PHILATELISTS MEET A meeting of about 20 Morrinsville district stamp collectors was addressed by Mr H. B. Hill, president or the Hamilton Philatelic Society last week. It was decided to rorm a Morrinsville Philatelic Society, and to hold meetings on the first Tuesday In each month. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr E. H. Hutchings; vice-president, Mr W. Morrison; secretary and treasurer, Mr G. H. Cooper; executive, Messrs R. T. Osborne, H. H. Skeet and R. Cates.
