MAY BE LIFTED
BAN ON POTATOES FEDERAL CABINET’S PLAN EFFECT IN NEW ZEALAND (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Feb. 28, 11.43 a.m.'i SYDNEY. Feb. *2B The Morning Herald says that unless there is an immediate and substantial fall in the price of Australiangrown potatoes it is practically certain tnat the Federal Cabinet will decide to lift the embargo on the importation of New Zealand potatoes within the oext two weeks. After the Cabinet had discussed the proposal yesterday it was revealed that a tentative plan to raise the embargo under conditions which would reasonably safeguard Tasmaniar growers had- been prepared. The Cabinet has not adopted till* plan, but the discussions made it clea/ that the majority of the Minister? •upperT it. The plan prepared, it is understood would admit a quota of New Zealand potatoes sufficient to meet all the shortages of the local supply as lon* as the Australian price remains above the level to be fixed, probably somewhere between £ls and £2O a ton. The concession will operate purely as a temporary emergency measure and the ban will be re-imposed as soon as the Australian supplies become normal.
