MAORI’S ASSAULT
TEAROOM PROPRIETOR OVERTURNED CAR FOUND u-. ““ (Special to Times) ROTORUA, Monday Mr Reginald Smith (62), proprietor of the tearooms at the buried village, Te Wairoia, was attacked by a Maori who entered the premises early this morning. Mr Smith was opening the door of a sitting room when a strong electric torch was shone in his face and he was struck heavily. Steadying himself, he observed his assailant making off along the road. When about seven miles from the tearoms, Constables Donnelly and Kernp, who had hurried out in a motorcar, saw the lights of a car being ► switched off. They discovered that it had been overturned on the road, and saw a Maori run along the road. Constable Kemp gave chase and caught the man after going about 100 yards. The car, which was extensively damaged, had, unknown to Its owner, Commander D. M. Fell, of Rotorua, been removed from bis residence during the night.
