“CANADIAN RAND”
PORCUPINE GOLD OUTPUT (Canadian Press Letter) TORONTO, Jan 5 Canada’s mining optimists are referring to the Porcupine gold area in northern Ontario as the “Porcupine Rand.” Its gold production has reached a tempo of more than £9,000,000 annually. The Porcupine area is staked solidly for 12 miles and inhabited by some 40,000 people, virtually all of whom are dependent on the mining venture for their livelihood. The South African hand has been developed for more than 100 miles and is the home of about 750,000 people. It produces around £90,000,000 in gold annually. Mining men in northern Ontario are confident that mineralization in the Porcupine also extends 100 miles or more and that its future is quite as bright as was the South African Rand’s 25 years ago.
