TE AWAMUTU DIBPLAY PROCESSION AND SPORTS (Special to Times) TE AWAMUTU, Monday A spectacular procession in connection with Fitness Week was held through the streets on Saturday arternoon as a preliminary to the sports meeting and demonstration at Albert Park. Headed by the Municipal Band and the Fire Brigade, and with Mr G. B. Melrose as marshal, the procession comprised about 150 senior pupils of the Te Awamutu Dls rict High School, members of the Croquet Club, Brownies, Guides, Cubs, Scouts, secondary school old girls’ Basketball Club, Maoris, and players in various sports. At the park several hundred people assembled and a fine programme of sporting events was provided. Fine organisation by the school staff and the officials of the Athletic Club made the afternoon’s display highly successful. A display or physical drill was given by the District High School senior cadets, under Lieut. L. J. Smith and Sergt. lan Cullen, 30 members participating. Then came demonstrations by the primary pupils, the girls in a ball and hoop game (won by Selwyn House), and overhead ball (also won by Miss House), boys’ relay (won by Cameron), tunnel ball by junior girls (Miss House) and a physical drill display by primary girls. Later in the afternoon hair-a-dozen members or the Girl Guides demonstrated life-saving, and a wall-scaling exhibition was given by the Boy Scouts. The Cubs participated in a tug-or-war, eight boys pulling against nine, being defeated in two straight pulls. A goal-kicking competition Tor a medal donated by the Mayor last football season was finalised, the finalists being T. Dalziel and C. Teddy, both noted Tor their ability at kicking goals during Rugby games. Dalziel eventually won. Athleitc Club Championships Keen interest was evinced in the Te Awamutu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club’s championships, results or which Senior half-mile cycle.—J. A. Robertson 1, G. Allen 2, V. Keppell, of Hamilton, who was not officially a competitor. He beat Buiford by inches. Junior one-mile cycle: C. McCallum 1, A. Coxhead 2, L. McAlpine 3. Won by 14 lengths, with two lengths between second and third. Senior o.ne-mile cycle.- V. Veen 1, J. A. Robertson 2, 11. Liddington 3, G. Allen 4. Seven started. Won by half-a-wheel. Time, 2.43. 220Yds. run: K. Rickit 1, M. Haselden 2. Rickit beat Keppell very narrowly, with Haselden 2yds. away. Junior halfmile cycle: A. Coxhead 1, C. McCallum 2, L. McAlpine 3. Won by three lengths, same distance between second and third. Four competed. Time, 1.32. 440Yds. run: D. Paul 1. Three started, and Paul ran home alone, the others dropping out when pursuit was hopeless. Time, 55 3-5. Senior three-mile cycle: V. Veen 1, G. Allen 2, H. Liddington 3, J. A. Robertson 4. Won by a wheel, third man * length away. Seven started. Time, 8.41 2-5. 880Yds. run: D. Paul 1, J. Newton 2. Won by 2yds. Time, 2.19 1-5.
