UNWANTED JEWS

PREVENTING IMMIGRATION MOVE IN SOUTH AFRICA (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) CAPETOWN, Feb. 25 A former Ministerialist, now a member of the Opposition, Mr Eric Louw, in moving the second reading of his Aliens Bill in the Assembly, the object of which is to prevent further Jewish immigration, said that if South Africa did not tackle the problem occurrences in certain European countries would be repeated here. South Africa’s proportion of Jewish inhabitants was the fourth highest in the world—namely, 5 per cent, which Jewish leaders admitted was the danger line. The Minister of the Interior, Mr R. Stuttaford, asserted that the existing laws controlled undesirable Jews. He alleged that the Nationalists had adopted anti-Semitism because it had brought power in Europe groups which otherwise would have been powerless. The Government would unalterably maintain the principles of freedom and justice. IN BRITISH GUIANA NOT ALLOWED TO LAND NO ACCOMMODATION AVAILABLE (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 26 While a Commission is exploring possible land settlement sites in the hinterland of British Guiana, the German liner Koenigstein arrived at Georgetown, and the captain asked permission to land 165 Austrian Jews, who were stated to possess £6OOO in cash and to have other funds available for settlement. The Government refused permission on the ground that no accommodation was available.
