LAST TRIBUTES PAID

REV. R. J. BOYTS FUNERAL CORTEGE HALF-A-MILE LONG One of the longest corteges seen in Hamilton for many years took part in the funeral of the late Rev. R. J. Boyt, from St. George’s Church, Frankton, .to the Hamilton East cemetery to-day. Mr Boyt was formerly vicar of Franlaton and a minor canon of St. Peter’s Cathedral. The cortege, which was over half-a-mile in length, included representatives from all parts of the Waikato Diocese, while the Government was represented by the Hon. W. Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture, and Mr C. A. Barrell, M.P., and the Borough Council by the deputy-Mayor, Mr F. Findlay. Holy Communion was celebrated at St. Geonge’s at 6, 7 and 8 a.m. and Immediately prior to the funeral, at 9 a.m., requiem mass was celebrated by the Bishop of Waikato, Rt. Rev. C. A. Cherrington. Associated with him was the Dean of Hamilton, Very Rev. T. P. Weatherhog, as deacon, and the Rev. F. A. Oulds, the subdeacon, read the lesson. The choirs assisting were from St. Peter’s, St. George's and Holy Trinity. The service at the graveside was conducted by Bishop Cherrington.

The pall-bearers were:—Revs. C. W. Chandler (Cambridge), G. J. Craib (Cambridge), E. R. Wright (Helensville), J. D. W. Raine (Ngaruawahia), P. C. S. Sertgel (Hamilton), M. G. Sullivan (Te Aw-amutu). GREAT WORK FOR PARISH BISHOP’S APPRECIATION A tribute to the work of the late Rev. R. J. Boyt, as vicar of St. George's parish, is paid by the Bishop of Waikato, the Rt. Rev. C. A. Cherrington, in the current issue of the Diocesan Magazine. In his opening remarks the Bishop referred to the fact that Mr Boyd had been obliged to resign his cure and also the chaplaincy of the Diocesan School for Girls. “Mr Boyt held both these posts for some years and by his enthusiasm, hard work, cheeriness and tact, has endeared himself to all those to whom he has ministered . . said the Bishop. Reduction of Church Debt “During his vicarate, by Mr Boyt’s energy and his people's co-operation the large debt on the church and hall has bee.n reduced from thousands to below £3OO. Regular services have been held all over the parish, frequently eight and nine on a Sunday, and so far as the writer knows, there has never been a word of complaint of any sort in the parish. During all this time Mr Boyt had his own opinions and stood by them in faith and practice, but his unfailing sympathy and tact have preserved that amity and peace in the parish which we all ought to exhibit in our church life. Not a single person has left the church because of what the vicar said or did. The writer owes Mr Boyt more than he can say in many, many ways; one of the most important has been the help given in the spiritual preparation of candidates for Holy Orders, at retreats and interviews. Mr Boyt has introduced several important matters into Synod, some of which have received considerable provincial attention. "It has been the same with Mr Boyt’s work as chaplain of the Waikato Diocesan School,” continued the Bishop. "This for some years he did for nothing and latterly for a very small honorarium. He has conducted the school services, taken classes in religious knowledge and has been ready to help in every way at any time* He is beloved of both the stall and the girls . . RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY FROM FIRST CHURCH MEMBERS Reference was made by the Rev. S. J. Atkins at the forenoon service at First Church, Frankton, yesterday to the loss sustained by the congregation of St. George’s in the death of the Rev. R. J. Boyt, and it was decided to convey a resolution of empathy to Mrs Boyt and to Si. George's congregation.
