SMITHFIELD REPORT MARKET IMPROVING (By Telegraph.— Press Association) WELLINGTON, Friday The New Zealand Meat Producers Board’s report on the Smithfield market, covering the period ended February 23, states that larnb prices were again a shade easier, hut the demand was improving at the lower prices. Wether arid ewe light-weight prices were unchanged arid Die others were lower. The trade remains slow. Chilled beef prices were lower this week on a slow trade and owing to heavier supplies New Zealand porker pigs v.ere quiet and prices were unchanged. New Zealand baconer pigs were quiet and unchanged. Quotations arc: New Zealand sheep, crossbred wethers and/or maiden ewes, 571 b to 641 b. 3Ad: 6-5 to 721 b, 3Jd: ewes. 491 b to 561 b, 2£d 571 bto 6-4 lb, 2id. New Zealand Jambs, Canterbury, 361 b and under, 7jd, 371 b to 421 b, 7*d; 431 b to 501 b, 7d; second, quality, average about 3Ub 7d: other South Is land unquoted. North Island. Downs, 36ib and under. 7*rt; second quality, average about 301 b, 7d; North Island, first quality, 361 b and under, 7d; Australian, Victorian, Orst quality, 371 b to 421 b, 6*d.
