Pirow, in the Assembly, replying to Labour criticism regarding his European tour, denied that he tried to negotiate the transfer to Germany of West African areas at the expense of Belgium and Portugal. “I did not suggest that if the Union retained certain territories as a result of negotiation someb-ody else would have to pay, hut if the territories were retained and compensation was payable those benefiting must pay." he said.
