PETROL TAKEN FROM GRADER Caught replenishing the tank of the car they had been driving with petrol from a road-grader parked at Gordon ton on Monday night, James William Reid (19) and" Arnold Bernard Callaghan (21), labourers, of Fairfield, appearing before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., to-day, charged with the theft of petrol valued at Is. For the police, Senior-Sergeant G H. Lambert said the youths ran out of petrol and were caught in the act of taking some from the grader, being surprised by a farmer who ii-’ed in the neighbourhood. They made c. clean breast of the matter to the police, coming forward voluntarily the next morning.
“There have been so many theft: of petrol in the district of late, how ever,’’ the Senior-Sergeant added “that it was decided to bring the dc fendants before the court.”
Each was convicted and fined £1 in default two days' imprisonment.
