THE NEW POPE

ARRANGEMENTS FOR ELECTION CONCLAVE OPENS ON MARCH i CARDINAL MASSIMI FAVOURED United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright

VATICAN CITY', Feb. 22

The Cardinals all day yesterday exchanged visits and conferred before the conclave. A survey of the visits showed that Cardinal Massimo Massimi, a legal expert, orator and author, received the largest number of visit's, namely 17.

Cardinal Massimi had not previously appeared among the leading candidates for Papal dignity, but the number of his supporters is believed to substantially exceed the number of yesterday's callers, who are known to favour his election.

It is officially stated that the conclave of cardinals for the election of the new Pope will be opened on March 1. It is expected that all the 62 cardinals will have arrived by that date. Cardinal Boggiani, aged 76, is ill with diabetes and almost blind, but he has been pronounced sufficiently recovered to participate. Three doctors, one of whom is a surgeon, with operating equipment, will be located in a secret area to attend to invalids. Thirty loud-speakers are being erected on the facade of St. Peter's.
