POPULATION FIGURES
TREND IN DOMINION Of the 3007 persons who left New Zealand permanently during the year ended March 31, 1938, 3707 went to British countries, notably Australia and Great Britain, and 289 to foreign Slates, more particularly China and the I'nited States. These figures are revealed in the annual report of population and buildings prepared by the Census and Statistics Department. Passengers arriving in New Zealand miring the 12 months numbered 38,738. and passengers departures during the same period were 36,352. a gain of 2386. In addition there were also 1 *2.2(4 4 through passengers on visiting ships and 663 4 tourists on cruising liners. During the six preceding years and also in 1027-28 departures exceeded arrivals, whereas prior to these years the only occasion that New Zealand had b-M population Immigration was in the last, major depression of the late ’eighties and early ’nineties.
