TO-DAY’S RECIPE
DATE & APPLE GINGERBREAD Required: i cup butter, 2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 beaten egg, 1 teaspoon vanilla essence, 1 cup chopped dates, i teaspoon ground ginger, 1 cup chopped raisins, 1 cup castor or light brown sugar, t teaspoon ground cinnamon, i teaspoon ground cloves, 1 cup chopped walnuts, i 1 cups apple puree. Beat butler and sugar to a cream. Stir in egg and vanilla essence, then the flour sifted with the soda and spices, and lastly the fruit and nuts. Beat till well mixed. Turn into a shallow greased baking tin. Bake in a moderate oven for about J hour. Cut into squares when cold and decorate with icing and slices of dates, if liked.
