WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
AT TE KOWHAI The February meeting of the Te Kowhai Women's Institute was held in the hail recently, Mrs Allen presiding. The meeting opened with one minute’s silence for bereaved members and the reading of the Creed. Mrs J. Ward Chapman, Mrs Whatu and Mrs Higgins, our visitors, were welcomed. Talks by Mrs Chapman and Mrs Whatu were much appreciated and a
hearty vote of thanks was accorded them.
Nominations were received for the new committee. A substantial sum of money from the sales table was contributed to the Maori Hostel fund. A competition was won by Mrs J. Ward Chapman. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses Mesdames C. Limmer, W. Limmer, R. Limmer, N. Nicol, Stewart and Robinson. AT WHATAWHATA The February meeting of the Whatawhata Women’s Institute was held in the local hall recently. The president, Mrs Rowe, presided over a large attendance of members. The meeting opened with the singing of the Institute song after which the correspondence was dealt with. Apologies for absence were received from several members.
A letter from Mr H. Jacobs on behalf of the Whatawhata Maoris was received and it was decided to forward this to the Parliamentary representative for the district.
It was decided to hold a concert and dance on March 15, the proceeds to be devoted to the Maori Hostel Fund, the Maoris to contribute hakas, pois, etc., to the programme. Members are requested to make this event as widely known as possible. Nominations for the committee for the forthcoming year were received. Mrs Russell was appointed delegate to the annual meeting of the W.F.W.I. on April 18. It was decided to hold the Institute picnic at the Hamilton Lake on March 8. The picnic to start at 10.30 and members’ husbands were invited to be present.
The roll call, “A two-course dinner for 5 adults to cost 2s 6d,” was very well responded to. The competition, “A plate of coconut ice” was won by Miss D. Eyre.
An interesting demonstration on coathanger covering was given by Mrs Smith, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses Mesdanfes Carlinson arid Harris.
The roll call for next month will be ‘‘A beauty hint.” The competition will be “The best jar of apple jelly.”
AT PIRONGIA
The monthly meeting of the Pirongia Women's Institute was presided over by Mrs G. Bainbridge in the absence of Mrs W. 11. Bell, president
There was a large attendance of members and visitors. Members were reminded of the annual general meeting to take place in March, it was decided to subscribe to the Hamilton Maori Hostel building fund at a later date.
After business had been . concluded Hie rest of the afternoon was given over to a farewell parly in honour of Mrs J. Beet. Competitions were won by Mrs H. G. Hall and Mrs C. Berry. Items were rendered by Mrs W. G. Berry, solos, Mrs A. Kerr iTe Awamutu), solos, and Mrs Kerr and Miss G. Bell, duets.
Mrs C. C. Berry, in presenting Mrs Beet with a handsome farewell gift from the members, spoke of Mrs B.eet's long residence in Pirongia, where she was highly esteemed by all. Mrs Beet had been a member of the Women’s Institute since its inauguration in Pirongia. Mrs Beet suitably responded. Gaines followed and afternoon tea was served by Mesdames L. Godfrey, Thomson and helpers. AT OHINEWAI The monthly meeting of the Ohinewai Women's Institute was held in the hall recently, Mrs McGaughran presiding. Mrs Hopkinson gave a talk on London dealing principally with the Tower and its environs and the coster folk, telling some amusing tales of the latter. .She was accorded a hearty vote ol thanks. The competition winners were: — Rest bloom. Mrs Welch; best decorated vase, Mrs Welch J, Mrs Hill 2. The roll call, “The person I should like to meet and why,” was well responded to. The hostesses were Mesdames McGaughran, Ridgley and Shotbolt and their competition was won by a visitor, Miss Mclnnes. The group meeting was held at Ohinewai during the month, Mrs C. Storey presiding. A very interesting talk on pictures was given by Mis Treloar. who illustrated her talk with inan> beautiful water colours and photographs. Mrs Trclo iv a so judged the binners. Ohinew with •scene depicting Lake Waikare, tmbroided on Zephyr blue satin.
