WALSH AGAIN
CRICKET VISITORS EIGHT WICKETB FOR 37 RUMS HARD STAFF FINDS HIS FORM (By Telegraph.—Press Association) PALMERSTON N-, Monday A two days cricket match against the Wellington minor association*' foam was commenced by Sir Julien Calm's side at the Palmerston North sports ground to-day, and when 6tunip* were drawn the visitors in reply to the home team's first innings total of 206 had lost lour wickets lor 162. The .lay was overcast and there was a fairly strong cross-wind. The ket was in good order, but not last enough to assist the fast bowlers, Lush, Walts and Pritchard, whose work was overshadowed by that of Walsh, the left-hand spin bowler, who broke the great partnership of Evans and Murchison. He went on to take eight wickets for 37. Features ol' the day were the batting of Evans and M irchison, of the associations’ teem, the last rate of scoring hy the home team, the howling of the ex-Australian Walsh, and the masterly if unenterprising batting of Hardstaff i 76 not out,. The teams consist of 12 a-side. Good Opening The day was chilly, particularly for the spectators, but the attendance was close to 2000. The associations' team had first use of the wicket and Robertson, Evans and Murchison played the bowling with confidence, scoring at a very fast rate. The first 50 was hoisted in 4 28 minutes and' the century in 63 minutes.
With Evans and Murchison well set a substantial score seemed possible, but Walsh, with a w<cket to suit him, soon put a different complexion on the game. He was mainly responsible tor dismissing the side for a small total. The visitors commenced their innings just after three o’clock, but they were not enterprising. Mudge started well, but 60on snicked Pritchard into the slips for Callichau to take the catch. Two Further Wickets Two more wickets fell quickly, but Ilardstaff and Oldfield and then Hardstaff and PlillPpson hatted soundly to establish the team in a strong position at slumps. Ilardstaff had one “life." Otherwise he played all the bowlers with the utmost confidence. However, he bad no apparent desire to force the pace. CENTURY TO HARD6TAFF PRITCHARD S IMPRESSIVE SPEED (By Te'egrapn.—Press Association) PALMERSTON N\, Tuesday In contrast to yesterday’s overcast sky, bright sunshine Hooded the sports ground when play was resumed in the match, S.r Juiien Calm & XI. against Minor Associations, to-day. The wicket was dry and appeared perfect for the batsmen. Hard&taff and Phiihpson resumed . the hatting and the former took a single from Pritchard s first ball. The second humped up awkwardly and struck Phlllipson on the body. Pritchard's speed was very impressive and the first hall of his second over spelt disaster lor Pli.liipson, who played it on to his wicket. Lush Fails to Score The newcomer was Lush but he failed to score, Pritchard uprooting his off stump. Smith joined Hardstaff and the pair carried the score along with confident style to 220 for six wickets at 12.30 PJB. Detailed scores are os follows:
