RAILWAY RETURNS
RECORD PREDICTED MONTHLY INCREASE OF £42,000 AUCKLAND DISTRICT INCREASE (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Tuesday Indications are that the gross railway revenue for the four-weekly period ended February 4 will be a record, according to a statement issued by the Minister of Railways, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, yesterday. “As I have already said,” commented Mr Sullivan, “we are estimating that the net revenue for the current financial year, which ends on March 31, will be somewhat above £700.000. The latest figures available strengthen this impression. For the four weeks ended February 4, the preliminary revenue fijgures indicate that the gross revenue will be about £33o,ooo—the highest revenue total ever yet to be recorded in the history of our railways for a four-weekly period. The net earnings for this four-weekly period should approximate £150,000, or £42.000 more ihan the net revenue for the corresponding period of last year. Very Satisfactory Position “Having in mind the adverse effect on railway traffic of the had weather experienced by the Dominion gm» ;,m.> during the recent holiday perio !, tindecrease of 1,000,000 in sheep [raffle following ihe facial eczema outbreak, and the decreased grain production in the South Island, the financial recovery recorded by the department is very satisfactory indeed. “The Auckland district has done its share toward increasing the traffic handled by the department," 'Occluded Mr Sullivan. “The dlstr ; ct’r» revenue for the current financial year to February 4 shows an increase of £128,691 over that for the same period of last year.”
