DAIRY PRODUCTION
BETTER THAN ANTICIPATED LITTLE PASTURE GROWTH Although Waikato pastures have a green appearance, there is not the pasture growth in the district that casual inspection of the farms would indicate. Rain has fallen during the last fortnight, but its benefit has been offset by cold, driving winds. However, conditions are not nearly as dry as during the corresponding period last year when pastures had dried up and farmers were very perturbed about feed.
Despite the fact that conditions are better, dairy production to date in many districts is still below that up to the corresponding date last year. This is due- to the fact that the unfavourable spring resulted in such a setback that the leeway has been too much to make up. However, the prospects are that production during March and April will be better than the production for the corresponding period last year.
