CORRECT CRICKET

VISITORS AT CREASE

WAIKATO’S BETTER FIELDING DEMPSTER’S FINE EXHIBITION The cricket throughout the early part of Sir Julien Calm's Xl's first innings to-day in reply to Waikato's score of 131, could not be called bright and attractive. Rather it was correct cricket with all strokes made with fluency and confidence, the steady Waikato attack being treated on its merits. The weather had cleared beautifully and the pilch and outfield were in firstclass order, but, a strong cross-wind assisted the bowlers. After Waikato’s dismissal, five minutes after the start this morning, the visitors opened with Dempster and Dyson and both batsmen played themselves in carefully before they began looking for runs. Their strokes were always free and they hit the ball hard even on defence, and but for the improvement in Waikato's fielding on the displays in the Hawke Cup matches the score would have mounted much faster.

The ex-New Zealander. C. S. Dempster, played confidently from the outset and made all his strokes with the utmost ease, using: his feet to get right behind every ball. His partner. Dyson, was out to a splendid catch in the slips by Going off Clough, but the captain. Ileane, and Dempster were still together at the luncheon adjournment with the score at G 3 Dempster 30. Ileane 13}. Double Figures in 18 minutes The English team's opening pair, Dempster and Dyson, contented themselves with testing the strength of the attack and only four runs came off the first three overs from Everest and Going. Skeet, behind the stumps, appealed against Dyson for leg before in Going's first over, but the umpire ruled “not our.'* Double figures were reached in about 18 minutes’ playing time, Dempster having nine of them. Dyson was not seeing much of the bowling and when he did he showed no inclination to make runs. On the other hand Dempster made the most of anything loose but was by no means aggressive. Dyson had been at the crease 25 minutes before he opened his account with a single. Another to Dyson carried the total to *2O. Dempster just made his crease in running a short single. Sheet whipping the bells off smartly but the batsman was just in.

' 0. S. DEMPSTER With the total approaching 30 Dyson's batting was more enterprising and he notched the first'four by hooking Going to leg. Denfyster was also opening out and treated the crowd to a glorious cover drive, the ball flashing past Aitken to the fence. This made Dempster 25 and Dyson had reached nine. First Wicket Falls The first change in the Waikato attack accounted for Dyson. Clough relieved Everest and his third ball nipped off the pitch, Dyson sending a hard catch to Going. The slip man took it with his'left hand. 44—i—11. Ilcane received an ovation \vhen he went to the wickets. The left-hander punched Going between cover and mid-off to the ropes and then guided the next delivery to third man for a single. This brought, the 50 up in 61 minutes. Another Bowling Change Going had sent down 10 overs for 19 runs when he was replaced by Bright. The slow attack was not so easy to score off. Bright trapping Dempster several times with sharplyturning balls. This was the concluding over before lunch and the score was 63 for one. Dempster (30 and Heane (13; being unbeaten. A Beautiful Six Buns came mainly in singles when Dempster and Heane continued their innings after luncheon. However, in Bright’s second over. Dempster jumped out to one. hitting it high towards McKenzie on the long off boundary and it. foiiind the ropes. Heane brought 70 up with a four to the leg bank and capped Brig M's over with a beautiful six over mid-on’s head. Skcot threw Bright the hall for another turn with the attack and with his final hall he beat Heane. The straight delivery kept unusually low and the batsman placed his legs right in front of it. 83-2-24. Jlardstnff lost, no time in opening bis score when he partnered Dempster.
