18-FOOTER CHAMPIONSHIP RESULT OP THE FIRST RACE (Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Thursday Keen Interest was taken in the first pace for the world’s 18-footer sailing championship held on the Waitemata Harbour yesterday afternoon, which resulted in a win for the M class boat Manu (Richmond Cruising Club), which defeated the V class boat Jeannette (Ponsonby Cruising Club) by aeven seconds. Jeannette led on both rounds of the course and was about to cross the finishing line when Manu, handled very smartly by G. Chamberlin, threw round on starboard and passing Jeannette gained the verdict. Vaalele (Richmond Cruising Club) wns third, Taree (the present holder of the world’s title) fourth, and Manene ("Herne Bay Yacht Club) fifth. The three Sydney yachts. Taree, St. George and Malvina, and 20 of Auckland’s smartest M and V 18-footers took part in the race. St. George, which was leading Jeanette by 15 seconds, capsized at the first mark in gybing round it. The Finishing Times The race started at 3.5 p.m. The finishing times were: Manu, 5h 3m 15s; Jeanette, 5h 3m 235; Vaalele, oh 4m 375; Taree, 5h 5m Us: Manene, 5h 6m 235; Arline, 5h 9m 255; Mercedes, 5h 9m 30s: Manaia, 5h 10m 7s; Limerick. 5h 10m 2 4s; Riptide, 5h 12m; Shamrock. 5h 12m 435; Lanai, 5h 13m 17s; Malvina, 5h 13m 51s; Manoa, 5h 13m 58s; Memutu, 5h 16m 355; Irina, 5h 16m Bs. The other boats did not finish. The result was: Manu (Richmond Cruising Club), 1: Jeanette (Ponsonby Cruising Club), 2; Vaalele (Richmond Cruising Club). 3: Taree (Sydney), 4. The points rained were: Manu, 225; Jeanette, 127; Vaalele, 63; Taree, 31; Manene, 15; Arline, 7; Mercedes, 3s; Manaia, 1. The second heat for the championship will be sailed on Friday, starting at 3 p.m.
