SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION
METHODIST GARDEN PARTY The St. John’s Methodist Circuit annual garden party was held in the Rototuna church hall and grounds on i Saturday last.. Congregations from j St. John’s, Matangi, Newstead, Horsham Downs, Puketaha and Rototuna were all well represented and were ; unanimous in voting the garden party j the most successful held for some years. The Rev. G. E. Brown, the superintendent minister, introduced the Rev. R. B. Tinsley, chairman uf the district, who officially opened the proceedings. The stall-holders were as follows: Luncheon and afternoon tea, Rototuna j and Horsham Downs ladies; produce, Matangi and Newstead congregations with Mr W. Baker as convener; sweets, soft drinks and ice-creams, circuit young ladies, convened by Misses G. Hicks, S. Ladd and R. Clement; cakes, St. John’s ladies, with Mrs P. Gower as convener. A display of gladioli was staged by Mr W. J. Brown, of Newstead, and a competition to pick the six best blooms created much interest. The winners of competitions held during the afternoon were: stepping the chain, Mrs K. Borman and Mr A. E. Thomas; tossing the sheaf, M. C. Thomas; clock golf, E. Ruck; nail-driving, Mrs W. Finlay and Mr W. B. Young. In addition to tennis, organised by Student J. H. Woolford, the young people were well catered for with races and donkey-rides.
