ANIMATED BIDDING

WOOL SALES AT WELLINGTON RECENT LEVELS MAINTAINED (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Wednesday The third Wellington wool sale of the season opened this morning with a total offering of 24,703 bales, mostly topmaking wools. There was a full and representative bench of buyers, and from the start the bidding was animated, although it was evident the well-derflned limits were operating. Judging from the first catalogues, prices were not quite up to January levels, but they were fully on a par with rates at Invercargill and Duneiin, where the market showed an upward tendency. A comparison with the last Wellington sale in January is not altogether satisfactory as the wool offered then was superior to that offered Today. which was described as indifferent. The bulk of the offering comprised Wairarapa and Manawatu crossbreds, wUh some halfbreds from Marlboro ugh and elsewhere. Growers showed readiness to meet the market and passings were compar itively few. The top price this morning was 13Ad for 10 bales of crossbred, and a line of ewes brought 12Ad. The unofficial range of early prices is as follows: Southdown, 9ld to lOd: hogget, Did to 10|d; Romney ewes, 9jd: Romney hogget, 9|d; A ewes, 10d to lOfd; Lincolns, lOJd; necks, iOJd; pieces. 8d to B|d; bellies, 7d to 7id; lambs, 7Ad to 11 Id; according to quality, halfbred, lid. An estimate after the majority of catalogues were sold was that values were down a farthing to a halfpenny per pound on the January auction. Hogget wools, however, were fully firm on January and [good values were realised for lamb’s wool. Thirtyeight bales of coarse crossbred brought 13|d and five bales of AA ewes realised 12 Id.
