CRICKET VISIT

SIR J. CAHN’S TEAM WATCH WITH WAIKATO SIDE FIXTURE COMMENCES TO-MORROW Waikato cricket enthusiasts will have the opportunity to-morrow of seeing in action several of England’s foremost masters of the game when Sir Julien Cahn's eleven meets Waikato. New Zealand's strongest minor .association, in a two-day fixture at Seddon Park. The visiting side may be termed England’s second eleven for Sir Julien chose his men after the M.C.C. side to tour South Africa was announced. However, he obtained cricketers who before long will, no doubt, make their debut in big cricket and thus New Zealand is afforded the opportunity of witnessing exponents who may Liter become famous in the game. Although the Waikato side is perhaps not as strong as that which has taken the field in Hawke Cup games this season, it is nevertheless a combination which should provide st-em opposition to the visitors. The Waikato side is: R. Skeet (captain), S. A. R. Badeley, A. Lissette. H. Going, P. Bright. G. Hampton. P. Jordan, A. J. Aitken, E. Everest O. McKenzie. R. Clough, W. Higginson (12th man). M. Lyon, T. Lyon and D. Morgan were not available. The English team will be chosen from the following: G. F. H. Heane, C. C. Goodway, C. S. Dempster. V. E. Jackson, J. o! Lush, C. R. Maxwell. H. Mudge. J. E. Walsh, A. 11. Dvson. J. Ilardstaff, N. Oldfield, W. E. PTfillipson T. P. B. Smith. E. A. Watts. Heane’a Great Record Heane is vice-captain of Notts County and ic a left-handed batsman and medium right-handed off-spin bowler, who last season scored 1300 runs and took over 60 wickets. He is a hard hitter but at the same time maintains a good defence. Maxwell and Goodway are the two wicketkeepers and like Heane are the only English amateurs to make the trip. Maxwell is considered one of the best keepers in England. He has played for the Gentlemen against the Players while he also represented M.C.C. against. Bradman’s eleven. Powerfully built. Maxwell is a vigorous batsman, using: the “long handle” lo advantage. Goodway confines his cricketing ability to work behind the sticks where he has earned a fine reputation. Dempster needs no introduction to New Zealand cricket enthusiasts. Considered one of the outstanding- players in county cricket lie was eighth in the batting averages for the whole of England last season. Jackson is one of the Australian allrounders. who has the fieldsmen on the alert the whole time. He was considered unlucky In not making the last Australian touring side. Bowling Strength No lack of strength in the attack Is evident in the English side. Lush, another Australian, is considered as fast a trundler as McCormick and is said to maintain more speed over the first five overs than any other English bowler twit Fames. Watts is the fastmedium type and captured 129 wickets last season. He is also a good hat. Said to be a likely successor to Clarrie Grlmmett, H. Mudge is a troublesome slow bowler but was really included for his batting. Another reliable trundler Is Walsh, who sends down a left-hand off-break and a googly. He is stated to show distinct- promise of developing into one of the world's best bowlers and as a disciple of Fleetwood-Smith. spins the ball well. Assistance to Watts and Mudge will be given by the fast trundler Phillipson and with this combination the batting strength of Waikato should receive a severe test. Dyson will no doubt open with Dempster and as he has scored over 1000 runs annually during the last six seasons, he may be considered a very reliable batsman. Oldfield, said to be one of the coming All England players, is another steady bat. Smith was a likely candidate for the English side last season his all-round ability earning him considerable praise from critics of the game, many of whom consider him superior to D. V. P. Wright. English Test Player 4 Hardstaff has been seen playing in New Zealand before so his credentials are well known. He is the only All England player in the side and should prove a big attraction amongst the public. With a beautiful batting style combining perfect footwork with clever stroke play, Hardstaff should prove an object lesson for many of New Zealand's younger cricketers. Sir Julien has chosen a particularly well-balanced combination which may prove a difficult proposition for New Zealand teams but at the same time will do a great deal to improve the game in this country.
