SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS NATIONAL CONTESTS' OPEN Egg?' (By TeWrar>h.—Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Tuesday The national swimming championships were officially opened this morning at Invercargill with a hundred competitors assembled to contest the various events. A welcome was extended by Mr A. E. McGrath, president of the Southland Centre, Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P. and Mr J. R. Ilanan, Mayor. In the men’s 100 yards heats Hatchwell (Wellington) won the first by feur feet from Noel Crump (Auckland), the record holder, in 56 1-5 seconds. Millar (Southland) was third.
The title-holder, Hanan (Auckland), won the second heat from Pascoe (Auckland) by two yards. A ennington (Wellington) was* 5 feet away. Time, 56 4-5 seconds. The water polo contest resulted: Otago A 10; Otago B 4; Canterbury 9; Southland B 0.
