PETROL IGNITED

DRYING CRICKET PITCH 40 GALLONS EMPLOYED M.C.C. TEAM IN^ SOUTH AFRICA (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copvright) (Received Feb. 14, 3.15 p.m.) SALISBURY, Feb. 13 An unusual way of drying a cricket wicket after heavy rain was employed in the match between the M.C.C. cricket team and a Rhodesian eleven. A downpour had occurred overnight and no play was possible before lunch so it was decided to dry the pitch by pouring 40 gallons of petrol on it and igniting the material. It was then possible to resume the game. M.C.C., who had scored 180 in their first innings, made 174 for two in their second and declared. Rhodesia were out for 96 and ,in their second strike lost six for 95' (Goddard two for 22). The match was drawn.
