DOMAIN BOARD SCHEME
SPORTB GROUND PROPOSALS COUNTY REPRESENTATION When the question of representation of county councils on the Hamilton Domain Board and the consequent contribution towards the funds of the board for the scheme to improve sports ground facilities in Hamilton came before the Waikato County Council at its monthly meeting to-day the opinion was reiterated by the council that the Domain Board should make application to the Government for a grant under the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act for the whole of the money required by the board for the completion of the scheme. The opinion was expressed by members of the council that county councils could do little by having only one member each on the Domain Board as they would be hopelessly out-voted by Government appointees who, living in the town, would probably have sympathies with the Hamilton Borough Council. The county clerk, Mr C. F. E. Barton, said the Domain Board would have to find the greater portion of capital required for the scheme and they owned the assets in the shape of the land so that it was only to be expected that they would have the greater share of representation. Furthermore, the county councils had been asked to contribute a very small percentage of the cost of the improvement scheme.
“We cannot hope to obtain greater representation on the board,” remarked the chairman, Mr J. A. Sampson, “and under the circumstances one member would be fairly satisfactory. The country residents would at least then get a say in matters relating to sports facilities in the town.”
