FOUR DROWNED

LAUNCH IN A STORM DESERTED CRAFT FOUND NO TRACE OF THE BODIES (By Telegraph.—Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Sunday The discovery of a deserted launch and a capsized dinghy, in addition to a pair of oars and a man’s hat, in the New River Estuary yesterday points to the probability of three men and a boy being drowned late on Friday night or parly yesterday morning during a sudden gale. The victims, all residents of Invercargill, are : Mp Thomas Victory Haggerty, labourer, (38), father of seven children. Mr James P&penhagen, truck driver, (34), father of three children. Mp Frank Herbert Rask, labourer (27), father of three children. HUary Leslie Haggerty (il), son of Mr Haggerty. The party left Invercargill at 10 p.m. on Friday in Mr Haggerty’s launch, intending to net flounders off Sandy Point. A strong gale sprang up about midnight, and early yesterday morning the launch's dinghy was found washed up on the beach with the flounder net attached to it. The launch was found moored in perfect running order. It is surmised the party had gone ashore in the dinghy, being capsized on the return trip during the storm. Despite exhaustive search no trace has been found of the missing.
